20 Characteristics of a Real Man

Image
The issue of what makes a real man has always been a subject of debate among men and women alike* This informed my research on that subject and i came up with the following 20 characteristics: 1. A man treats women with respect. If you don’t respect women, you’re not a man. Period. 2. A man understands that greater happiness lies in helping others, not helping himself. 3. A man doesn’t stand still while the world passes him by, he continually pushes himself. 4. A man is a leader in at least one aspect of his life, whether this means his family, with his friends or just in general. But he can also follow. The world wouldn’t work if everyone was trying to lead in every aspect of life. 5. You can depend on a man. You can’t depend on a boy. 6. “You cannot teach a man anything; you can only help him discover it in himself.” ~ Galileo Galilei 7. A man doesn’t need to be able to fight or to protect himself and his family physically. But it helps. He does however need to be wil...

Understanding Adolescent Behaviour

Image
Adolescence is a time of growing up fraught with change. It is a time of rapid physical growth and development, accompanied by hormonal changes that activate the development of secondary sex characteristics and bring on heightened sexuality and new emotions. As parents we stand a better chance of handling our children’s growing pains during this stage if we understand what is happening to them. The central task during adolescence is acquiring more independence. At around age twelve or thirteen, a child begins to grasp an understanding of the larger world outside his family. He becomes sensitive to things that are going on elsewhere in the world and has an inner aching from the realization that one day he will stand in that world as an adult. This notion is both exciting and scary. It is exciting because of the anticipation of gaining adult privileges and scary because of self-doubts about handling adult responsibilities. This growing awareness along with the onset of puberty moves hi...

How to make a good first impression - 11 helpful tips

Image
Did you know that it only takes a tenth of a second to make a first impression? In other words, when you meet someone for the first time, you need to be on your game from the very beginning. This includes being aware of everything from the words you choose to the body language you convey. Whether you're meeting new connections, team members, potential employers, or customers, I've put together a list of tips designed to help you put your best foot forward and make a killer first impression. 11 Tips for Making a Good First Impression 1) Be mindful of your body language and posture. Effective body language goes beyond simply standing up straight and having a firm handshake -- although those things are definitely important, too. When you're meeting someone for the first time, keep your posture open -- don’t tightly cross your arms or legs, don't ball your hands into fists, and don't hunch over in your seat. Lean in when you talk to show you're actively listen...

Rhesus Incompatibility and Miscarriages among women

Image
Most times, when two persons are about to get married, they are quick to make inquiry about the genotypes of each other. That is, whether any of them is AA, AS or SS. This is viewed as very important so as to forestall the ugly situation of giving birth to SS children (sickle cell) which occurs when two persons who are both AS get married. However, little or no attention is usually given to another crucial factor in child bearing- Rhesus Incompatibility. Rhesus Factor is an antigen that exists on the surface of red blood cells in most people (about 85% of humans). It is also referred to as Rh Factor. People who have the Rh factor have “positive” (+) blood types, such as A+, O+ or B+ while those who do not have the Rh factor have “negative” (-) blood types, such as A–, O– or AB– . The “+” and “-” in front of the blood group is the Rhesus factor. Generally, we have A+, A–, B+, B–, AB+, AB–, O+ and O–. Rhesus factor is genetic in nature. It is inherited from the parents, emphatically t...

What you should know about Sagging

Image
Most sources report that sagging pants began in the prison system. Belts are not allowed to be worn, due to the fact that they can be used as weapons or as a means to suicide. This resulted in the ill-fitting generic pants, too large to stay up on their own, to ride low on prisoner’s hips. Hip-hop artists adopted this look in the 90s (because you're not cool, if you don't do time, right?), and it quickly became popular among the youth. The most disturbing myth of the origin of saggy pants also comes from the prison system, and raises even more serious questions about why you'd want to emulate this trend. Sagging was said to be a symbol that the sagger was sexually available to other prisoners, or alternatively, already taken by another inmate. While several sources claim this to be true, others (like Snopes) tells us this is just a nasty rumor. Sagging pants may also be as simple as a rebellion, claims another source. The stereotypical “nerd” wears his pants very high, ...

How to get rid of stretch marks fast

Image
Stretch marks are the off-colored lines that you see on your skin’s surface. These marks are usually present in the abdominal wall but they can also appear over the upper arms, breasts, thighs, and buttocks. There are times when stretch marks cover large portions of the body. Although pregnancy is one of the main causes of these marks to appear, other causes such as rapid growth, sudden loss or weight gain, stress, heredity, and changes in your physical appearance can also make them more visible. The skin is composed of three layers and these are: epidermis or the outer layer, dermis which is the middle layer, and hypodermic or subcutaneous which is the deepest skin layer. Stretch marks usually occur in the dermis when the tissues that connect the muscles are stretched beyond its normal flexibility due to rapid contraction or expansion of the skin. As the skin stretched, it weakens the collagen while its production cycle is damaged and interrupted. This results to fine scars appear...

Indecent dressing and the cases of rape in our society

Image
In recent years, the occurences of the social menace called rape seems to be growing at an alarming rate. These days, the news of the day is never complete if it doesnt contain an incident of rape somewhere. What is even more heart rending is the brutality that accompanies this heinous act these days. Not only are the victims raped, they are also maimed or murdered in the most cruel manner imaginable. But, that is not my area of focus actually. Maybe that will be a subject for another article. My main focus is the act of rape itself and why it has become so prevalent in our society. It is noteworthy, and interestingly so, that as the cases of rape keeps growing, so also is the ugly trend of indecent dressing especially among the youths. While both male and female are culprits in this case, i will choose to focus on the female gender since they are mostly the victims of rape in our society. My big question now is: could there be a connection between the act of rape and indecent dressi...

Emotional Intelligence

Image
Emotional intelligence Many of us find it increasingly difficult to connect in the modern world, both with ourselves and others. An important factor in our ability to successfully connect is emotional intelligence. When it comes to happiness and success in our relationships, career and personal goals, emotional intelligence (EQ) matters just as much as the more well known, intellectual ability (IQ). We need emotional intelligence to turn intention into action, in order to make informed decisions about the things that matter most to us, and to connect to others in productive and nurturing ways. What is emotional intelligence? Emotional intelligence (EQ) is the ability to identify, use, understand, and manage your own emotions in positive ways to relieve stress, communicate effectively, empathize with others, overcome challenges and defuse conflict. This ability also allows us to recognize and understand what others are experiencing emotionally. This recognition and understanding i...

5 Benefits of sweating

Image
Sweating is undeniably an essential natural process that allows the body to stay cool. However, experts believe that sweating holds health and beauty benefits beyond just temperature control. How Sweating Works Eccrine sweat glands are distributed all over your body and are designed to excrete odorless perspiration that’s mostly made up of water, salts and electrolytes. Apocrine sweat glands, on the other hand, are found in areas with the most hair follicles, such as the scalp, armpits and groin. Apocrine glands produce a fat-infused liquid that is commonly secreted during emotional stress. When your body temperature rises, your body automatically releases sweat to help cool you down. This is controlled by the autonomic nervous system, which you can’t consciously control. However, emotions like anger, fear, nervousness and anxiety could also prompt you to sweat. Every person is born with anywhere between 2 million to 4 million sweat glands, which will determine in part how muc...
